It has been a thrilling experience for me to return to Tokyo and work with Vivid Brass Tokyo.
Our close relationship over the last few years has, I believe, led to an extremely fruitful musical understanding which makes it a joy for me to conduct this talented group. In addition to their considerable individual talents as players, they also have a real grasp of the special requirements that playing in a brass band demands and have made the musical jump from ‘brass ensemble’ to ‘brass band’ with conviction.
It is also, of course, a privilege as a composer to have my pieces played so well and at such a high level. The players have met every demand asked of them in today’s varied programme.
The last few days have been a joyful experience and I’m sure this sense of joy will be apparent to today’s audience.

ここ東京で再び、ヴィヴィッド・ブラス・トーキョウと演奏をともにできることは私にとって大変光栄なことです。
これまで数年間に渡って私達の充実した関係は、互いの音楽的理解を深め、この才能あるグループを指揮する喜びへとつながっています。個々のプレーヤーとしての素晴らしい才能に加え、彼らは金管バンドに求められる大切な条件を熟知しており、「金管アンサンブル」から真の意味での「金管バンド」へ変化しています。
この演奏会を通じ、自身の作品を高いレベルで演奏してもらえるのは作曲家として名誉なことです。プレーヤーは今回のさまざまなプログラムを私の願う通りに演奏してくれます。数日間であじわったこの私の喜びはきっと今日お聴きになってくださる皆さんにも伝わることでしょう。

I had just the BEST time working with VBT in May this year. The band gets better and better every year and the players understand the brass band concept very well.
We talks a lot about sound. I compared the VBT sound to the British sound and made the point that most brass band players in the UK don’t play in orchestras or wind bands, only in brass bands. So the cornet players don’t play trumpet much (if at all) and therefore can develop a really specialized cornet sound. In my opinion, it is not possible for one player to play cornet AND trumpet successfully. They really are two different instruments – as different as clarinet and oboe, for example! So while trumpet player will be able to get a nice sound from a cornet, it will still have a central focus to the sound which the British cornet sound doesn’t have – their sound is much warmer and wider. The very same thing applies to the tubas – the orchestral tuba has a focused centre to the sound, and the British brass band bass sound is usually less focused but broader and warmer. It is this warmth that gives the British brass band its special sound.
So I think its not possible for orchestral players to come together and recreate this sound. But that is not negative. What I like about the VBT sound is that it combines the best of both worlds. It has warmth and breadth when playing quietly but also a clear focus. It is a very special sound and one I enjoy very much.
